Poll: If you're happy and you know it...

I'm dissatisfied in many areas of my life right now. Blame it on turning 40, on my general predisposition or on all the stuff we've been through as a family lately. I'm wondering how many other people are in the same funk as I am. I made this poll to find out. No one will know who votes, only the totals will be calculated.

How satisfied are you with where you are in life? (Participants remain anonymous)

Julie Andrews in Sound of Music
Sally Fields getting an Oscar
Julia Roberts' laugh in Pretty Woman
Belle in Beauty and the Beast
Bill Murray in Caddyshack
Shaggy from Scooby Doo
Stallone after reading Rambo reviews
Napolean Dynamite
Too depressed to answer this poll
Britney Spears

Hmmmm.....I know I'm culturally illiterate. But this really is quite the reminder. Julie Andrews in Sound of Music I know. And I know about Britney Spears. And the one non-media related option "too depressed to take this poll, I understand." But, since none of those are the state I'm currently in, and since I don't know anything about the rest of the options, I can't take the poll :(

I'm in a state of low energy, trying to frenzy it back up to functioning, by drugging myself with distractions such as reading blogs when I should be working. I'm making it through the day, but dragging under the weight of "making it, but not thriving" for so long.

Your comment about that in a previous post hit me in the gut and made me cry, and has impacted me emotionally ever since. It was like I could see how that is a good thing to be actually making it, even if not thriving. But that has been my reality for so long (3 years? maybe more), and life as a single mom of four kids, one gifted with learning disabilities, who I have to battle to help with school (currently homeschooling, but his dad has fought me all along the way).....trying to pull off working part time, but part time isn't enough money, but it's too much work.....

So, who's the movie star category I most closely relate to? I don't know for sure. I have good days. I have bad days. I get out and do stuff. I try to crash into a therapeutic depression on the weekends for as much time as I can get away with it.

Anyway, I appreciate your honesty in sharing your emotions. Sometimes it helps me find words for what's going on with me (like the above mentioned statement that has resonated so deeply.) Blessings to you and your family.

I'd have probably got more references if you'd used cartoon strips - I'm certainly more Cahrlie Brown than Garfield

eclexia: My wife hands the kids to me when I get home from work with that look of "Help!" And that's with two kids. I can't imagine doing it with four kids - alone. Really sorry about that.

The weekends are also my time for "therapeutic depression." It's like I want to be cheerful for the family, but it's a time to "decompress." I'm learning to take a few hours on Sat and Sun to just watch a movie or read at the coffee shop. Then I can be "present," in body and spirit. It's got to be more of a challenge (understatement) for you doing it solo.

As for the poll, just think of the top as super happy and the bottom as super sad. Hope the week finds you closer to Julie Andrews than Britney Spears.

Beans: Hang in there till Springtime; that's what I'm doing.

Shannon: Guess one person is singing to the hills. :) (not me)

Kim: I'd be more Elmore Fudd than Bugs Bunny, although some would say I'm more Goofy than Mickey.
